Storm Offseason

storm's picture

The Storm has been very active this offseason.  Having lost to Nokians in the hard fought final, the Storm made several bold moves.  It all started with a blockbuster trade involving franchise goalie Cam Ward.  Ward had backstopped the Storm to the BFHL championship in 2009-2010.  With the development of Cory Schneider, Ward became expendable and was moved for the 20th overall pick in this year's enter draft and skilled centre Nazem Kadri.  The Storm then acquired an insurance policy in goal with the acquisition of Ondrej Pavelec from Bombers (in exchange for Yr 5 Sto 1 and defensive prospect Taylor Doherty).  The wheeling and dealing did not stop there.  In fact, several blockbuster moves followed:

  1. Storm moved high scoring winger Corey Perry in exchange for playmaking Toperdos center Nicklas Backstrom.
  2. In a shocking move, Storm sent No 1 Defenseman Alexander Elder to Bullies for young forward Ryan Johansen (the 4th overall pick in the 2010 BFHL Entry Draft), top goalie prospect Jacob Markstrom and BSB Yr 5 2nd Round Pick.
  3. Storm acquired smooth skating defenseman Jake Gardiner for the rights of UFA Mike Green.
  4. Dustin Brown is traded to Bullies for young forwards Derick Brassard and Nick Foligno and Yr 5 Sto 4
  5. Stephen Weiss was acquired in exchange for promising Magnus Paarjarvi
  6. Top Defensive prospect Brandon Gormley was acquired in exchange for Kyle Palmieri

These moves provide Storm with cost certain and payroll flexibility going forward.  The moves also addresses the lack of top-end prospects in the Storm's organization.

At the end of the day, the expectations for the Storm remain high.
